Think Better. Play Better.

A free chess coach that explains what you missed

64Coach shows you a position and asks what you would play. Then it explains what you saw and what you missed, and builds your training around your weak points: puzzles at your level, an opening repertoire, lessons, and games against Stockfish with a full review. It runs in your browser and installs on your phone.

  • 8,834 rated puzzles
  • 41 lessons
  • 8 Stockfish levels

What would you play?

Everything in one place

Move Detective

A position, and one question: what would you play? Make your move, say how sure you are, then see what you missed: a fork, a pin, a hanging piece or a hidden threat.

Three coaches, one position

Every explanation in three voices: a friendly teacher, a tactical analyst with the exact lines, or a strict tournament coach who checks how you think.

A coach that learns your weaknesses

Your chess profile shows what's strong and what needs practice. Keep walking into knight forks? The coach notices and gives you positions to fix exactly that.

A daily challenge

Three positions a day, the same for everyone, with a streak to keep. Plus 8,834 rated puzzles from Lichess, matched to your rating.

An opening coach

Not 20 moves to memorise: what each move is trying to do, and the traps to spot. Italian or London as White, Caro-Kann and QGD as Black, plus 41 lessons.

Play, then learn why

Play Stockfish at 8 levels while your coach asks what your opponent is threatening. Every game, even one you played over the board, gets a review that explains each mistake.

How it works

  1. Create a free account. Your progress is saved, so you can switch between phone and computer.
  2. Take the placement test. Solve 12 puzzles so the coach can find your level. It takes a few minutes.
  3. Follow today's plan. Each day you get a short mix of puzzles, opening drills, a lesson and a game.
  4. Watch your weak points improve. Every exercise is scored by skill. Your two weakest skills become the weekly focus, and the weekly report shows what got better.

Questions

Is 64Coach free?

Yes. 64Coach is free to use, with no ads and no in-app purchases. You only need a free account to save your progress.

What does the name 64Coach mean?

A chessboard has 64 squares, and 64Coach is a coach for the whole board: tactics, openings, middlegames and endgames. Its motto is "Think Better. Play Better." Understand what you missed, and better moves follow.

Do I need to download anything?

No. It runs in the web browser on any phone, tablet or computer. You can also add it to your home screen so it opens full screen, like an app.

What is the Move Detective?

64Coach shows you a position and asks: what would you play? You make your move and say how sure you are. Then the coach shows the best move and explains what you missed, such as a fork, a pin, a hanging piece or a hidden threat, and what your move would have allowed.

Can it review games I played over the board?

Yes. Enter the moves on the board or paste a PGN. Stockfish reviews the game, the coach explains each mistake in words, and Blunder Replay lets you replay the moves before a mistake and try again.

Does it learn my weak points?

Yes. Your chess profile shows each area as Strong, Solid, Improving or Needs practice. If you keep making the same mistake, for example walking into knight forks, the coach notices and gives you positions to practise exactly that.

What level is it for?

Beginners to club players. A 12-puzzle placement test sets your starting rating, puzzles adapt as you improve, and the Stockfish opponent has 8 levels from about 600 to 2300.

Which openings does it teach?

As White, the Italian Game (1.e4) or the London System (1.d4). As Black, the Caro-Kann against 1.e4 and the Queen's Gambit Declined against 1.d4. Every move is explained, and drills use spaced repetition to fix the moves you keep missing.

How does it find my weak points?

Every puzzle, opening drill, lesson and game is tagged with a skill. Puzzle themes are scored against what the Elo model expects at your rating, openings by drill accuracy, endgames and strategy by lesson scores, and games by accuracy and blunders. Your two weakest skills become the weekly focus.

Where do the puzzles come from?

From the Lichess puzzle database, which is free and public domain (CC0). 64Coach uses 8,834 rated puzzles from it, grouped by tactical theme.

Does it use AI?

No AI chatbot. The explanations come from the rules of chess and from Stockfish, the open-source chess engine, which runs inside your browser. Your games are not sent to any AI service.

What are the three coaches?

Every explanation comes in three voices: a friendly teacher with simple words, a tactical analyst with the exact lines, and a strict tournament coach who checks how you think. Pick the one that helps you most.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Ratings, puzzle history, opening drills and games are saved to your account, so you can switch between phone and computer. You can download a backup at any time in Settings.
